Penis Surgery : Do Benefits Far Outweigh The Risks?
Recently, a surgery to increase the length or width of a penis has become widely prevalent particularly in close-door settings. Of course, because there is no efficient standardization, the surgical techniques were often poorly documented. The results, likewise, failed to convince to the medical researchers.
In the early parts of 1970s, penile augmentation by surgery rose to popularity mainly due to three factors.
First, it was attractively described by a medical child specialist, who specialized in treating micro penis in boys. Second, it was given a desirable amount of media attention. Third, there was an effective widespread campaign about it. The results were very dramatic as the adult population became interested in the medical procedure. But of course, this was more due to psychological reasons similar to women who are attracted to breast augmentation surgery. Based on surveys, from 1991 to 1998, there were 10,000 men who had a penile surgery in the United States (3/day).
The problem arises as studies show that penis enlargement surgery does have side effects, risks, and even complications. There are data suggesting that remarkable problems are likely to occur to men who underwent penile augmentation surgery.
The common types of penis enlargement surgery
There are two types of penis enlargement surgery. One is designed to increase the length of the penis, and another to increase the width or girth of the penis.
- Surgery to increase the thickness of the penis
- Surgery to increase the length of the penis
In this type of surgery, the fat cells are taken from men’s abdomen and injected around the penis. This procedure will temporarily bulks up the penis and consequently the thickness.
The effect of penis surgery becomes void because the transplanted fat cells are as soft as women’s breasts, and the increase in the thickness of the penis from these transplanted fat cells will soon disappear as the body reabsorbs the fat cells. Worse, there is a tendency that the body re-absorbs the fat cells in an inconsistent rate, leaving the penis very hideous and lumpy.
In this type of surgery, the surgeon will cut the ligaments that support the penis ( a thing you should never do, please never have your penis ligaments cut !). As soon as the ligaments are detached, a part of the large section of the penis shaft that is held inside the body will move forward, thereby, extending the length of the penis. However, with this procedure, the penis will only have a small increase in the length of the penis during erection. Moreover, there are other disadvantages to this type of surgery, and they are:
- High costs . One procedure of penile augmentation ranges from $3,000 to $10,000 USD. According to evidence and surveys, this amount is not really worthy of the effect of the surgery.
- Medical complications . A penile augmentation surgery can have several complications including bleeding during the surgery, higher risks of infection during and after the surgery, and damage to other important tissues. Medical experts also include other risks like impotence, scarring, loss of sexual drives, deformity in penis, poor circulation of blood to penis and testicles, and possible damages to the nerves in the penis.
The surgery may also irritate the male organ and cause extreme and constant pain. It should be understood that penises are sensitive and delicate that even the best candidate for the operation may have complications.
Finally, surgery to augment the penis is a serious consideration. Besides lacking insufficient information on its efficiency, men should consider the risks. Are the small effects really worth the high risks?
