On the Forefront of the Penis: The Foreskin You Should Know

Known also by its medical term prepuce, the foreskin is the folded skin that provides covering and protection to the glans and therefore, the penis. Inside the fold of the foreskin is a mucous membrane that is as soft as the membrane found inside the mouth. This membrane ensures that the glans is soft, sensitive, and of course, moist. The foreskin is abundant in blood from its own blood vessels and rich in concentration of J-cells, which are sensory receptors exclusive to the foreskin. These exclusive sensitive tissues are enclosing the foreskin at the muco-cutaneous section. Found underside the penis is frenulum, which maintains the upward position of the foreskin.

The basic characteristics of the foreskin:

  • It is an internal part of the skin system of your penis
  • It is a fold skin with two layers.
  • It is an extension of the skin on your shaft that stretches forward going over the glans of the penis and folding back under to connect to the shaft in sulcus, immediately at the backside of the glans.

Functions of the foreskin of your penis

 As far as its function and significance, the foreskin has the following classifications:

Protective functions of foreskin

  • The foreskin provides glans protection from any injury

  • The foreskin provides the nerves of the glans protection and keeps their sexual function
  • The foreskin keeps the glans from becoming keratinized by maintaining its softness and moisture.

What Is Phimosis?

 Phimosis is derived from a Greek word, which means “muzzling.” The word is used to explain the inability or difficulty to pull off the foreskin. Phimosis is easy to identify because only a very small amount of foreskin opening is seen. This will then restrict the foreskin from retracting from the penis.
