Penis Different Stages, From Childhood to Adulthood

Men worry about their penis size, and to make matters worse, women join in the rally for a longer and thicker penis. The last decade has been especially tough for men who are dissatisfied with their penile length and girth, as research studies reveal that most men equate masculinity with the size of their penis. To understand this controversial organ, there is a need to understand how it grows and develops.

Biologists use a scale in order to chart the onset and progression of puberty. For boys, the changes are rated according to their genital development, which covers the growth of the penis and of the pubic hair.

The scale reveals the following stages in the growth and development of the male genitalia:

  • Stage I: before 11 years old. Known as the pre-adolescent stage, the male genitalia during this phase has an appearance that’s similar to early childhood, wherein the testes, scrotal sac, and penis are small in size.

  • Stage II: 11-13 years old. In this phase of development, there is a marked increase in the size of the scrotum and of the testes. The texture of the scrotal skin also sustains changes. When boys turn 12, it’s common for them to experience the thinning and reddening of the scrotum. Testosterone makes their body shape transform into a muscular and angular built.

  • Stage III: 13-16 years old. This is the phase when teenage males experience the full development of their genitals. The penis and the scrotum continue to enlarge and the scrotal skin begins to darken. Although the changes vary from one boy to the other, all males in general experience the enlargement of their penis in this stage. It is also observed that teenagers often experience spontaneous erections during Stage III, even if no sexual stimulation was made. As a result, many men wake up to nocturnal emissions, or ‘wet dreams’ from the night before.

  • Stage IV: Adulthood. In this stage, the male genitalia have fully matured, with the penis and the scrotum sporting an adult size and shape.

Factors affecting the growth of the penis

The testosterone is the male sex hormone that regulates and influences penis size. It is also the hormone responsible for the growth of facial hair, for muscular development, for the spouting of body hair, and for the increase in penile length and girth.

The normal size of a penis

Contrary to popular belief, there is no one standard size for a penis, as there is a wide range of normal sizes for the male sexual organ. Just like all the other parts of the human anatomy, the normal size of a penis differs as men age and get older. It’s no use for a full grown man to compare sizes with an adolescent for example, because they do not belong to the same stage and so they have different size standards.

In fully matured men, the average penis size while the organ is flaccid range from 8.2 to 9.7 cm, for the length and 1.6 to 2.7 cm. for the girth. When the penis is erect, the average length ranges from 14 to 16.5 cm. It’s good to remember that penis size is also dependent upon the height and weight of the person. Being too thin or being obese could certainly have an impact on penile length and girth.

 The good news

Thanks to modern science, men who are not satisfied with their penis size now have options to lengthen and thicken their shaft. Increasing penis size even after the genitalia have reached its full maturity is possible with penis enlargement medications, exercises and stretching devices.
